Baseball signs Jamaal Hawkins to letter of intent

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU baseball team announced the signing of infielder Jamaal Hawkins of Marietta, Ga. to a National Letter of Intent, on Thursday.

Hawkins (5-9, 170), currently a senior at Sprayberry High School, was a preseason all-state and all-county selection and is currently batting .426 with 15 RBI, 14 runs and a .520 on-base percentage through 17 games. Hawkins began the season with a 15-game hitting streak and has reached base in all 17 games to lead the Yellow Jackets to a No. 2 ranking in Class 5A with a 16-1 record.

As a junior, he earned second team all-county honors after batting .390 with 10 RBI, 29 runs scored, 10 stolen bases and a .530 on-base percentage, while leading the squad to the second round of the state playoffs. As a freshman, he batted .320 with 11 RBI, 15 runs, seven stolen bases and a .490 on-base percentage.

In AAU play, Hawkins led the East Cobb Astros to three consecutive national championships and was named to the AAU National Tournament team in 2006 after batting 11-for-17 during tournament play. During that season, he batted .401 with 29 RBI, 64 runs, 17 stolen bases and a .508 on-base percentage in 58 games.

"Jamaal is one of the top defensive shortstops in the southeast," said JU Recruiting Coordinator Chris Hayes. "He will bring a great deal of athleticism and consistency to our infield and we are excited about his future with our program."

Hawkins will join IF K.C. Clabough (Melbourne, Fla.), OF Chris Connelly (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), RHP Steven Eagerton (Jacksonville, Fla.), OF Kyle Fleming (Jacksonville, Fla.), RHP Sean Green (Chesterton, Ind.), IF Ben Henderson (Albany, N.Y.), IF Glen Johnson (Hobe Sound, Fla.), OF Jeff Klein (Gainesville, Fla.), RHP Matt Loosen (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), OF Thomas Myers (Lakewood, Colo.), LHP Matt Tomshaw (Kingston, N.Y.) and IF James Warren (Carmel, Calif.) in 2007.

The Dolphins will host No. 18 Stetson for a three-game set this weekend at Alexander Brest Field beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m. All three games can be heard live on WZNZ, AM 1460 with Barry Milligan calling all of the action.
