Clifford selected to Louisville Slugger All-America Team
May 30, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
Senior Pete Clifford was named Louisville Slugger Second Team All-America after leading the JU baseball team to the 2007 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Title and their second consecutive bid to the NCAA Regionals, as voted by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Wednesday.
Clifford, who was named A-Sun Tournament MVP after batting .350 (7-20) with a tournament-high three home runs, led the Dolphins to four consecutive wins to earn their third tournament crown and back-to-back NCAA appearances for only the second time in program history (1994-95).
"Pete had a tremendous year even though teams knew how good of a hitter he was," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "Opposing pitchers did their best to pitch around and not to let him beat them but he still put up big numbers. We are pleased with the year he had, we look forward to seeing more of it this weekend and we wish him continued success in his professional baseball career."
A first team all-conference honoree for the second consecutive season, Clifford continued JU's tradition of producing the A-Sun "Player of the Year" after Daniel Murphy received the honor last season. He also becomes the third Dolphin to receive the accolade after Chad Hauseman earned the honor in 2003.
Clifford, who leads the squad in 13 offensive categories, finished the regular season leading the A-Sun in RBI (53), total bases (127) and walks (39). He was also second in home runs (11), slugging percentage (.626) and third in batting average (.360) and on-base percentage (.465).
He also became the first Dolphin to earn A-Sun "Player of the Week" accolades three times in a season since Hauseman accomplished the feat during the 2003 season. On March 12, Clifford also joined Hauseman (April 7 & 14, 2003) as the first A-Sun player to win the award in consecutive weeks.
The Dolphins will open the 2007 Chapel Hill Regional on Friday at 6 p.m. as JU faces No. 3 North Carolina at Boshamer Stadium. The contest can be heard live on WZNZ, AM 1460 with Barry Milligan calling all of the action. The Dolphin Pre-Game Show will begin at 5:30 p.m.
