Basketball Moves Up With 83-78 Win Over Gardner-Webb

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman Haminn Quaintance (Sarasota, Fla.) posted his sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds, while junior guard David Lee (Columbus, Ga.) scored 21 points on 7-of-7 shooting to lead JU its fourth win in the last five games with an 83-78 victory over Gardner-Webb Thursday night at Swisher Gymnasium. JU (10-11, 5-9 A-Sun) had five players in double figures for the fourth time in the last five games as the Dolphins moved past Gardner-Webb (6-16, 3-10 A-Sun) for eighth place in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings.
Jure Lozancic (Omis, Croatia) and Aubrey Conerly (Calumet, Ill.) each added 13 for the Dolphins, while Riley Didion (Cambridge, Wis.) came off the bench to score 11 as JU shot 51 percent from the field and hit 8-of-17 three-pointers. The Dolphins also hit 23-of-32 free throws, marking their fifth straight game shooting better than 70 percent from the line. Quaintance added four blocks and three steals as JU limited the Bulldogs to just 28-of-64 shooting from the field, including 9-of-28 from outside the arc.
JU built a 12-point second-half lead with 13:26 to play when freshman Ljubisa Vrcelj (Windsor, Ontario) hit a turnaround jumper from the baseline, but Gardner-Webb whittled the lead down to two by hitting 9-of-10 free throws to pull within 73-71 with 3:24 to play. The Dolphins hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final 1:40 to put the game away.
The Dolphins jumped out to a 30-16 lead at the 8:50 mark of the first half before Gardner-Webb used a 19-9 run to pull within four with 1:59 remaining. Didion connected on 5-of-6 free throws and Lozancic scored underneath as JU built a 46-38 halftime lead. The Dolphins hit 6-of-9 from beyond the arc in the first half.
Brian Bender paced the Bulldogs with 19 points and 11 rebounds, but was the only Gardner-Webb starter in double figures. Bret Noonan added 12 and Andre Manning scored 13 off the bench for the Bulldogs, who hit 13-of-15 free throws.
JU has a chance to move up another spot in the A-Sun standings on Saturday as the Dolphins host Campbell at 7 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium.
