Basketball's Haminn Quaintance Voted Preseason All-Atlantic Sun

Nov. 10, 2004

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University sophomore forward Haminn Quaintance (Sarasota, Fla.) has been named to the Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference Team in a vote of the league's head coaches. Quaintance, who was tabbed A-Sun Freshman of the Year, as well as Second-Team All-Atlantic Sun last season after averaging a team-best 14.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game, is the only underclassmen on the team. Florida Atlantic's Mike Bell was tabbed A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year. Joining Bell and Quaintance on the A-Sun Preseason All-Conference team is senior guard Kevin Thomas from Georgia State and junior guards E.J. Gordon from Stetson and Brian Collins from Belmont.

Quaintance is one of three starters returning for the Dolphins this season. The 6-foot-7 forward put together the best freshman season at JU since Otis Smith and Ronnie Murphy 20 years ago, finishing the year ranked ninth in the Atlantic Sun in scoring (14.3 ppg), second in rebounding (8.8 rpg) and first in blocks (3.0 bpg), which also ranked fifth among all Division I players. Quaintance was the only freshman among the top 10 in the A-Sun in scoring and rebounding, while ranking among the league's leaders in eight statistical categories.

He posted nine double-doubles and became the first player in JU history to lead the team in scoring (14.3 ppg), rebounding (8.8 rpg), blocks (3.1 bpg), steals (1.7 spg) and field goal percentage (53.2%). His 84 blocks rank third all-time at JU for a single season, while his 8.8 rebounds per game were a JU freshman record. Quaintance, who was the first true freshman to enter the season as a starter since Jeremy Livingston in 1991-92, scored in double figures in 25-of-28 games and averaged the most points for a Dolphin freshman since Murphy (17.9 ppg) in 1983-84.

Quaintance became the sixth Dolphin to earn freshman-of-the-year honors, the first since Aaron Fox was tabbed Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year in 1996. He was the first JU freshman to earn all-conference honors since Murphy was voted First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference in 1984 and the first A-Sun freshman since Mercer's Scott Emerson in 2000 to earn all-conference honors.

JU opens the 2004-05 season with an exhibition game against Florida Tech on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. at historic Swisher Gymnasium. The Dolphins open the regular season against No. 22 Florida on Friday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster, at the arena box office or by calling the JU Athletic Ticket Office at 256-7407.
