Basketball Downs Florida Tech, 77-73, In Exhibition Play

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore forward Haminn Quaintance (Sarasota, Fla.) scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead four Dolphins in double figures as JU shot 55 percent from the field in a 77-73 win over Florida Tech in exhibition play Saturday night at Swisher Gymnasium. The Dolphins open the regular season against No. 22 Florida Friday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.

Junior guard Jesse Kimbrough (Mexia, Texas) added 14 points and four assists in his JU debut, while junior forward Antonio Cool (Chicago Height, Ill.) scored 10 and grabbed five boards. The Dolphins connected on 30-of-55 shots from the field and dished out 18 assists in the contest, while out-rebounding the Panthers, 33-23. JU led by as many as 18 with 14:27 to play, but Florida Tech went on a 16-0 run to pull within two, 54-52, at the 9:26 mark.

Panther center Kevin Craig keyed the run with six points as Florida Tech shot 61 percent in the second half and hit 14-of-18 free throws. JU built the lead back to 60-53 on back-to-back driving lay-ups by junior guard Aubrey Conerly (Calumet, Ill.), but the Dolphins did not seal the game until junior guard B.J. Surry (Independence, Mo.) drilled a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining in the game.

JU built a 42-26 halftime lead by hitting 17-of-30 shots from the field in the first half, including 5-of-9 from outside the arc. The Dolphins limited Florida Tech to just 6-of-20 shooting and forced 10 turnovers in the first half. JU busted open a close game with a 10-0 run to take a 42-24 lead at the 1:19 mark of the half. Dolphin starters David Lee (Columbus, Ga.) and Joey Robinson (Oklahoma City, Okla.) played limited minutes because of foul trouble as JU committed 27 fouls and had three players foul out. The Dolphins got 24 points from their bench and played 11 players.

Titas Vainauskas led the Panthers with 17 points and five rebounds, while Ryan Maultsby added 16 points and four boards.
