Basketball Wins Thriller Over Belmont, 70-68

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior point guard Jesse Kimbrough (Mexia, Texas) had 17 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead four Dolphins in double figures as JU overcame a late six-point deficit to down Belmont, 70-68, Monday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium. It's the third straight come-from-behind win for the Dolphins, who improve to 8-7 overall, 4-4 in the Atlantic Sun. JU also broke a four-game losing streak against Belmont dating back to their first meeting in 2001.

Sophomore forward Haminn Quaintance (Sarasota, Fla.) added his fifth double-double of the season for the Dolphins with 11 points and 13 rebounds, including two game-winning free throws with 17 seconds remaining. JU trailed 68-67 following a three-pointer by Belmont's Dan Oliver with 4:30 to play. The Dolphins turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, but junior guard David Lee (Columbus, Ga.) responded with a steal and fed Quaintance on the break. His free throws gave JU a 69-68 lead. Kimbrough then tied up Oliver with four seconds to play to give the Dolphins the ball back on the alternate possession. Aubrey Conerly (Calumet, Ill.) hit 1-of-2 from the line to seal the game with two seconds remaining.

Junior center Mario Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) came off the bench to score a career-best 13 points and block four shots, while Quaintance added three blocks and four steals. JU had a season-high 14 steals in the game and scored 22 points off 17 Belmont turnovers. Lee scored seven points and pulled down a career-best seven rebounds as JU out-rebounded the Bruins, 38-34, including 20-8 in the second half. JU limited Belmont to just 2-of-9 shooting the final 8:41 and connected on 10-of-11 free throws in the second half.

JU led 31-27 at the half after limiting Belmont to 26 percent shooting in the first half, including 1-of-9 from outside the arc, while scoring 14 points off 12 Bruin turnovers. The Dolphins extended the lead to eight at the 17:55 mark, but Belmont responded with 10-0 run to take a 40-38 lead just three minutes later. The game featured 10 ties and 12 lead changes.

The Dolphins are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. when they take on Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C., in the first of three straight road games.
