Men's golf ties for seventh at season opening event

Sept. 18, 2007

FLORENCE, S.C. - - Joshua Kinsey carded an even-par 72 to lead the Jacksonville men's golf team to a round of 311 and a tie for seventh place at the season opening Raines Development Group Intercollegiate.

Played on the par-72 Country Club of South Carolina, the Dolphins got a great effort from Justin Jones as he claimed a top-10 finish for the first time in collegiate career - tying for ninth at five-over par.

"It was a disappointing finish to the tournament, but we're going to get better from this experience," said JU head coach Jim Taketa. "It's a learning process for these guys and the more tournament play they get, the better we will be in the long run."

Furman rallied from a 15-shot deficit to claim the 15-team title, posting a three-under par 285 in the final 18 to finish at 877 - holding off Western Carolina by a stroke.

Troy's Michael McGrady won the individual title after shooting an even-par 72 to end the event at two-under par, winning by three shots.

Jones posted a two-over par 74 in the final round for JU to take home a share of ninth place at 219. Kinsey's even-par round of 72 was the best for the Dolphins and moved him into a tie for 34th at 226, 12-over par.

Freshman Michael Main shot a 10-over par 82 to finish in a tie for 52nd, with Matt Kleinrock and Kipp Henritzy carding an 83 in the final round. Kleinrock tied for 60th while Henritzy tied for 75th.

The Dolphins are back in action again on Sept. 29 at the Shootout at Angel Park in Las Vegas, Nev.
