Russell Knox leads PGA Tour Pre-Qualifier in Texas
Sept. 19, 2007
SPRING, Texas - Former JU golfer Russell Knox's pursuit of a spot on the PGA Tour is off to a rousing start after rounds of 66 and 65 have put in the lead at the PGA Tour Pre-Qualifying Tournament.
Knox torched the par-72 Cypresswood Golf Club on Wednesday to take a two-shot lead over Cole Isban entering the final 36 holes.
His strength so far in the first two rounds has been his play on the par-5 holes. Knox is seven-under par on the four long holes, recording an under-par score on three of them in both rounds.
He opened the tournament with a six-under par 66, going three-under par on each side. He opened his round with a birdie at the first and followed with another at the fifth.
A bogey on the sixth dropped him back to one-under but he rallied with back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh to go to three-under par.
The back nine saw Knox roll off three straight birdies on Nos. 12, 13 and 14 to go to six-under. A bogey at the 16th was quickly overcome by a birdie at the 17th to finish his 66.
The second round got off to a hot start with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 1 and 2. Another bogey at the sixth dropped him to eight-under for the tournament, but a birdie at the seventh wiped that bogey out and he topped it with an eagle at the eight to go four-under for the day and 10-under for the tournament.
Knox had another solid back nine, knocking in birdies on Nos. 13, 14 and 17 to reach the midway point with the lead at 13-under par.
In two rounds, Knox has racked up 14 birdies and leads the tournament in scoring average on the par-3.
Knox will tee it up in the third round on Thursday with the final round set for Friday. The low 37 and ties will advance to the first stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament.
