JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU men's golf team opens its spring season on Saturday as they face No. 44 Northwestern in an 18-hole match at Pablo Creek Country Club.

The Dolphins enter the spring season looking to improve off a roller coaster fall season and begin with this tough one-day match.

"This is great opportunity for our young guys to get some experience in a one-day setting that will prepare them for tournament play later this summer," said JU head coach Jim Taketa. "Northwestern is a very good team and will give us a good gauge of where we are and where we're going."

With a lineup featuring inexperienced freshmen and sophomores, the Dolphins battled through a difficult fall season with their best finish being a tie for seventh at the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate and the Charleston Southern Fall Invitational.

Junior Christian Martin, a member of the 2006 Atlantic Sun Conference championship team, finished the fall season with the best stroke average - 74.63. Justin Jones, a Jacksonville-native, was also impressive in the fall, finishing second on the team with a 74.86 stroke average.

"We've got an awfully young team that is still getting learning the college game," Taketa said. "Our qualifying tournaments are very competitive and it's pushing everyone to get better, which is all you can ask for."

The first group will go off at 1 p.m.
