March 3, 2008

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Justin Jones carded a one-over par 72 in the morning and a one-under par 70 in the afternoon to tie for fourth and lead the JU men's golf team to a sixth place finish after the first day of the Charleston Southern Spring Kick Off Tournament.

Jones's one-under par round in the afternoon on the par-71 Cooshaw Creek Country Club set a new career best and put him in the top five in the individual competition.

The two stellar rounds for Jones led the Dolphins to a sixth place finish after two rounds, trailing Notre Dame's "B" team by three for fifth. JU shot a 302 in the morning and followed with a 300 in the second round to finish at 602.

Memphis leads the 10-team tournament at 570, posting a one-under par 283 in the second round, and leads Atlantic Sun Conference rival Kennesaw State by one.

"We played better in the second round and Justin set the tone for the rest of the guys today," said JU head coach Jim Taketa. "With the weather moving in tomorrow, anything can happen. We just have to be ready to play and handle the conditions."

Matt Kleinrock is tied for 30th after posting a pair of five-over par 76s to finish at 10-over par, 152. Joshua Kinsey is tied for 37th after a 79 in the opening round and a 75 in the second round to finish at 12-over par, 154.

Stephen Healy opened with a 75, but closed with an 80 to tie for 39th at 155, 13-over par. Tim Adams shot a pair of eight-over par 79s to tie for 47th at 158, 16-over par.

The Dolphins wrap up the tournament on Tuesday, going off in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
