Men's golf team in second at the North-South Intercollegiate

March 10, 2008

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman Stephen Healy carded a one-over par 73 in the first round of the North-South Intercollegiate, leading the JU men's golf team to second place after 18 holes.

Healy's round came as he battled the windy conditions on the par-72 Jacksonville Beach Golf Club, posting a one-under par 35 on the front nine. His back nine was two-over par and saw him battle back after losing his drive on the 10th hole.

JU is seven shots out of the lead, held by Florida Gulf Coast after posting a 291 on Monday to lead the 10-team event.

"We had a good round today, we just struggled to finish the round today," said JU head coach Jim Taketa. "The guys are feeling good and they are confident in having a good round tomorrow."

JU got a two-over par 74 from Justin Jones, which included an even-par 36 on the back nine to sit just four shots out of the individual lead and inside the top 20. Jones had a lot of birdie opportunities slide by and will look to take advantage of those on Tuesday.

Matt Kleinrock posted a three-over par 75, which finished with a bogey on the 18th hole. Kleinrock battled throughout the round, bailing himself out of trouble a couple of times and playing the par-fives under par.

Christian Martin and Tim Adams both shot a four-over par 76. Martin played well throughout the day, including a 40-foot bomb for birdie on the seventh hole of the day.

Adams was off to the best start of any of the Dolphins, sitting a two-under par through 11 holes. But a few bad shots got in his way and he battled to finish at four-over par.

The Dolphins will go off in the final wave on Tuesday morning with Florida Gulf Coast and Eastern Illinois. The first tee time for JU is set for 8:40 a.m. on No. 1.
