Men's basketball set for Music City Madness

Nov. 29, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville men's basketball team will get a good gauge of where it stands in the Atlantic Sun Conference this weekend.

JU (3-3) opens its conference schedule on the road against the preseason picks to finish first and second in the league - Lipscomb and Belmont.

The Dolphins open the road trip on Thursday against Lipscomb at 9:15 p.m. (EST) before a matchup against Belmont on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. (EST).

"These are two of the best teams in our conference and it's always tough to go on the road, especially in conference play," said JU head coach Cliff Warren. "We know what we need to do to be successful and we're looking forward to the challenge."

A year ago, Belmont and Lipscomb shared the A-Sun regular season title and faced off in the A-Sun Championship game - with Belmont prevailing in overtime to go to the NCAA Tournament, with Lipscomb being invited to the NIT.

The young Dolphins will be relying on their freshmen to step up again. In the last four games, the freshmen have scored a majority of the Dolphins points.

Against UCF on Monday night, Ben Smith scored a season-high 14 points to lead four Dolphins in double figures. It was the third straight game in which Smith had put up 10 points.

Both games can be heard on the JU Sports Network and ESPN 1460-AM, with Barry Milligan calling the play-by-play.
