Men's hoops knocks off Lipscomb to get No. 3 seed
Feb. 24, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville men's basketball team closed the regular season out in style, using a hot shooting first half and a strong rebounding effort in the second half to lead the Dolphins to a 74-67 win over Lipscomb in Atlantic Sun Conference play on Saturday night.
The win gives the Dolphins (15-13, 11-7 A-Sun) the No. 3 seed in next week's A-Sun Tournament, hosted by ETSU. Jacksonville also clinched its second winning season in the last three and just the third in the last 10.
Jesse Kimbrough finished off the final home game of the career with 17 points and four assists, tying his career-high with three 3-pointers. He was one of four Dolphins to score in double figures, with Lehmon Colbert joining him for the team lead with his second double-double of the season - racking up 17 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
JU will face No. 6 seed Campbell in the first round of the A-Sun Tournament at 3:15 p.m.
"This was a good win to finish off the regular season," said JU head coach Cliff Warren. "Our focus is getting ready for next week and our first opponent Campbell. We can't look ahead or relish what we've accomplished - we still have a lot of work to do."
Joining Kimbrough and Colbert in double figures was Corey Claitt and Ben Smith. Claitt had 16 points, with 11 coming in the first half. Smith had 11 points and six assists for his fifth double figure scoring performance in the last six games.
Another big time performance came from Marcus Allen. The sophomore was held to just five points, but pulled down 11 rebounds - including eight on the defensive glass.
Lipscomb (18-11, 11-7 A-Sun) got a game-high 18 points from Eddie Ard and 12 points from Brian Fisk.
With JU leading by 16 just three minutes into the second half, Lipscomb got back into the game with a scoring rush. The Bisons scored 18 unanswered points to turn a 49-33 deficit into a 51-49 lead with just 10 minutes left in the game.
The Dolphins countered with a run of their won, scoring the next eight points - six of those coming on back-to-back 3-pointers by Colbert to take a 57-51 lead with just over seven minutes left in regulation.
Lipscomb cut the margin to three on a 3-pointer by Michael Teller, but the Dolphins came right back with the knockout punch. JU went on a 8-1 run, capped by a pair of Ben Smith free throws to take a 67-57 lead with 2:05 remaining.
The Bisons didn't give up and cut the lead to five with 14 seconds left, but Kimbrough sealed the win with a pair of free throws with six seconds left to ice the win.
Jacksonville was 18-of-23 at the free throw line, with Smith leading the way by going of 7-of-8.
JU used 12-1 run late in the first half to blow a close game open in the first half en route to a 43-29 lead at the half.
The Dolphins head into the A-Sun Tournament sporting an 11-5 record since the Christmas break.
