Dolphins Fall To Lenoir-Rhyne In Season Opener
September 4, 1999
Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Braves improved their record to 2-0 with a 28-13 victory over the JU Dolphins in the season opener for Jacksonville. JU struggled on offense in the first half accumulating just 116 total yards. The only score of the half for JU came on a 34 yard TD pass from QB Gary Cooper to TE Scott Kennedy. LRC extended its lead to 21-7 late in the second period on a TD run by Tony Pope, his third touchdown run of the half. The Dolphins trailed 21-7 at the break.
Cooper and Kennedy connected again on the opening drive of the second half, this time from three yards out to cut the lead to 21-13. JU would get no closer. LRC closed out a 13 play, 88 yard drive late in the third quarter to complete the scoring.
Pre-season all-American RB Greg Portee led the JU rushing attack with 53 yards and Jon Underhill chipped in 35 yards on just seven carries, but his playing time was limited in the second half with sore ribs.
QB Gary Cooper had a solid day completing 18 of 38 passes for 240 yards with 1 interception and 2 touchdowns. In addition to the two TD's by Scott Kennedy, Brett Palmi had a huge day with 5 catches for 136 yards, and Rico Tillman caught six for 51 yards.
JU will travel back to North Carolina for a meeting with Davidson College on September 11. The Dolphins defeated DC 19-14 last year in the Inaugural Game for JU Football at Milne Field.
