Football Names Team Captains For 2000 Season

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University football team has named junior tight end Scott Kennedy (Tampa, Fla.), junior quarterback Gary Cooper (Jacksonville, Fla.) and sophomore defensive end Will Weatherford (Odessa, Fla.) team captains for the 2000 season, in a vote by team players on Friday night.

Kennedy, who has been a part of the JU program since its inception in 1997, earned District III Academic All-America honors as a sophomore after catching 22 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns, while earning a 3.79 grade point average in the classroom. Cooper, a Fletcher High graduate who has been the Dolphins' starting quarterback since the program began in 1997, threw for 1,205 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore. Weatherford started all nine games at defensive end last season as a redshirt freshman, where he ranked third on the team with 39 tackles and recovered two fumbles.

The Dolphins held an open scrimmage on Saturday at Milne Field, running through more than 100 plays in a two-hour period in preparation for the season opener against Lenoir-Rhyne on Sept. 2 at Milne Field.

The Dolphins kick off the 2000 season on Thursday, Aug. 31 with a "Kickoff Tailgate Party" and The Steve Gilbert Show live from 7-8 p.m. at Sneaker's Sports Grille in Jacksonville.
