Football's Brett Keener Named I-AA Special Teams Player of the Week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore kicker/punter Brett Keener (Melbourne, Fla.) earned Division I-AA Independent Special Teams Player-of-the-Week honors for his play in the Dolphins' 31-22 win over Wagner Saturday at Milne Field. Junior defensive back Russell Cheatham (Rockledge, Fla.) was named to the defensive honor roll, while junior quarterback Gary Cooper (Jacksonville, Fla.) earned offensive honor roll honors.

Keener accounted for a career-best seven points, including a career-long 35-yard field goal and four extra points. Keener also helped the Dolphins control the field position game, nailing nine punts for an average of 40 yards, including two inside the 20 and a long of 53 yards. The JU defense took made the most of the field position advantage, recording a season-high five sacks (-32 yards), while limiting the high-powered Seahawk attack to just 265 yards of total offense.

Cheatham turned in his best performance of the season with an interception and a forced fumble in the fourth quarter, to go along with two tackles and two quarterback hurries. The 5-8, 158-pound cornerback also had 59 yards in returns, including a 41-yard kickoff return. Cooper, making his first start in four games, threw for a season-high 201 yards and two touchdowns, while running for another score, as the Dolphins scored more than 30 points for the first time in the last 10 games.

JU will play its final home of the season on Saturday, Nov. 18, against Monmouth at 1 p.m. at Milne Field. Following the game, the Dolphin men's and women's basketball teams open their 2000-01 seasons at Swisher Gymnasium.
