Football drops 41-6 contest to North Greenville

TIGERVILLE, S.C. - The JU football team ended their program high six-game road schedule on a sour note as the Dolphins fell to North Greenville, 41-6, in a non-conference contest, Saturday evening at Younts Stadium.

JU (4-4) allowed the most points this season (41) while only generating 287 yards of total offense. North Greenville (7-2) racked up 430 yards of total offense and scored 21 unanswered points to end the contest.

"North Greenville came out tonight and took it right to us," said JU head coach Steve Gilbert. "We need to put this behind us, get back home and prepare for the No. 1 team in the country next weekend."

Senior running back Jerry Brant finished with 85 yards on 23 carries to surpass Brent Alexander for second place on the JU all-time rushing list. Junior quarterback Chris Horton finished 13-for-31 for 167 yards and an interception. Junior receiver Nate Conner grabbed five catches for 40 yards. Defensively, sophomore free safety Aaron Woods tallied a career-high 11 tackles (eight solo).

Quarterback Eric Moeller led the Crusaders by completing 19-of-26 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Rashad Cummings tallied a game-high 119 yards and receiver Joseph Rowe grabbed six catches for 74 yards. Tight end Brandon Dobbins finished with four catches for 54 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Josh Williams and Ken Floyd each had a game-high 13 tackles.

Leading 13-3 at the half, NGU increased the lead to 20-3 at the11:35 mark of the third quarter when Moeller hit tight end Brandon Dobbins for seven yards across the middle. The Crusaders set up the drive after a blocked punt put them at the JU 12-yard line.

The Dolphins cut the deficit to 20-6 at the 6:08 mark of the third quarter when freshman Donovan connected on a 35-yard field goal.

NGU increased the lead to 27-6 when Moeller hit Dobbins for a 36-yard strike down the left sideline with 2:18 remaining in the third quarter.

The Crusaders pushed the lead to 34-6 at the 9:44 mark of the fourth quarter when defensive back Derrick Miller returned a fumble 48 yards for a touchdown.

NGU made it 41-6 with 2:41 remaining when Moeller hit Talbot for a four-yard fade in the left corner of the endzone.

JU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead at the 7:16 mark of the first quarter when Donovan Curry connected on a 32-yard field goal. Brant set the tone for the drive by ripping off 34 yards on seven carries.

North Greenville took its first lead of the contest, 7-3, after a one-yard touchdown run by Matthew Moore with 2:46 remaining in the first quarter.

The Crusaders increased the lead to 10-3 at the 13:26 mark of the second quarter when Adrian Escalona connected on a 33-yard field goal.

NGU made it 13-3 with 6:44 remaining in the first half when Escalona connected on a 23-yard field goal. The Crusaders had scored a touchdown on a run play to the left side but a holding penalty negated the score.

JU will return to D.B Milne Field on Nov. 4 at 12:30 p.m. for a showdown with No. 1 San Diego.
