Sept. 4, 2006
BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The JU men's golf team opened the season on Monday the same way it ended last season - winning.
The Dolphins started their 2006-07 campaign with an impressive 14-shot victory over UNF at the Sanctuary Cove Preview on the par-71 Sanctuary Cove Golf Course, the site of the 2007 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship.
JU opened an 11-shot lead after the morning 18 with a seven-under par 277, led by Duncan Stewart's course record five-under par 66. Stewart had seven birdies for the round, including a 15-footer on the 18th to finish with a three-under par 32 on the back nine.
"This is a great start to our season," said JU head coach Jim Taketa. "This was a great opportunity for us to get to know the course where the conference championship is. It's a long season, so we need to keep getting better and better as the year goes along."
Kleinrock carded a career-best one-under par 70 in the first round and broke it in the final round, posting a two-under par 69 to finish in second at three-under par 139. It is the first time in his collegiate career that he has posted a round under par.
Knox fired a three-under par 68 in the opening 18 and closed with an even-par 71 to finish in a tie for second at three-under par.
Jamie Kennedy carded a two-over par 73 in the first round and followed with a two-under par 69 to finish in a tie for seventh at even-par 142.
Christian Martin fired his career best in the final round, posting a two-under par 69 to follow up a three-over par 74 in the opening round to finish in a tie for ninth at one-over par 143.
Justin Jones, playing in his first collegiate event at JU, opened with an 80 and closed with a 77 to finish in 22nd.
The Dolphins are back in action again at the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate in two weeks.
