EL PASO, Texas - Russell Knox carded a five-under par 66 in the second round to finish in a tie for fourth after two rounds at the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic on the par-71 El Paso Country Club.
Vanderbilt's Luke List leads the 28-man field comprised of last year's All-America honorees at 12-under par after setting the course record with a nine-under par 63 in the first round. Georgia's Chris Kirk is in second just one shot back at 11-under.
"Russell had a good second round after battling through the first round," said JU head coach Jim Taketa. "He's put himself in position to have a good finish with another solid round tomorrow."
Knox opened his day by teeing off on the back nine and made three straight pars before a bogey on the par-5 13th. He rallied with back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15, but gave a shot back with a bogey on 16 to finish his opening nine at even-par.
As he started his back nine, Knox birdied the third hole, but gave that shot back with a bogey on the sixth followed by three straight pars to card an ever-par 71 in the first round.
Starting the second round on the first tee, Knox birdied the second but bogeyed the third to go back to even. He caught fire on the seventh, racking up three straight birdies to go to out in 33 (three-under par).
He followed that up on the back nine with birdies on 11, 14 and 15 before a bogey on the 16th wrapped up his round at five-under par, 66.
Knox will go off in the second to last group for the final round with nationally ranked Rhys Davies of ETSU and Brendon Todd of Georgia.
