Men's golf in fourth after the first round of the Furman Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. - First Round Results

Duncan Stewart fired a three-under par round of 69 to lead the Jacksonville men's golf to a three-over par round of 291 and fourth place in the Furman Invitational.

The Dolphins trail tournament leader Elon by four shots after the first round. Elon shot one-under par, 287, to lead the 20-team event.

Elon's Justin Newton is tied with East Carolina's Andre Thorsen and Charleston Southern's Stuart Carrihill at four-under par in the individual competition.

"While we didn't play all that well, we're still in the hunt," said JU head coach Jim Taketa. "Duncan put together a good round today, but we're going to need everyone on firing the rest of the way."

Stewart was the only Dolphin to post a sub-par round, with Russell Knox, Jamie Kennedy and Joshua Kinsey all shooting two-over par, 74, to tie for 33rd in the individual competition.

Matt Kleinrock rounds out the team score, posting a six-over par 78 in the opening round.

The Dolphins will tee off with Samford on Saturday morning, with the first group going off at 11:50 a.m. The tournament will conclude with the final round on Sunday.
