Liberty Upsets JU
October 22, 1999
Miami, Fla. - Liberty scored two early goals then hung on to surprise No. 13-ranked Jacksonville (11-3-1), 2-0, in the opening round of the FIU Golden Panther Classic Friday night in Miami.
The Flames (9-2-0) broke on top early when Jose Gomez took a crossing pass from teammate Kian Brownlee and fired a score to the open left-side near post at 22:25. Less than 10 minutes later, after a Jacksonville foul just beyond the penalty area, Derek Avilez converted a direct free kick past a Dolphins defensive wall that was still trying to organize itself. Liberty goalkeeper Dean Short recorded his fifth complete shutout on the season with five saves.
On the night, Liberty outshot Jacksonville, 10-8. The Dolphins dropped their second straight decision since claiming the No. 13 national ranking and are 0-2-1 in their last three. It was the eighth win in the last nine matches for the Flames. The tournament concludes Saturday night when Jacksonville faces Marshall (5-9-1) at 5 o'clock followed by Liberty against host Florida International (3-7-1) at 7:30 pm.
