Jacksonville Remains Undefeated With Overtime Victory

September 25, 1999

Jacksonville, Fla. - Jacksonville University (6-0) remained undefeated with a 3-2 overtime victory over South Florida (3-4) Saturday afternoon at the Ashley Sports Complex on the Campus of Jacksonville University. Dolphin senior Vladamir Rak converted a free-kick from 30 yards out in the game's 119th minute to seal the victory for Jacksonville.

A goal by USF's Andy Chase at the 38:45 mark was the only tally of the first half as the Bulls defense withstood nine Dolphin shots, many from point-blank range. Goalkeeper Bubby Leasure made five saves in the half to help stake the Bulls to the 1-0 lead. The game remained 1-0 in favor of the Bulls until the 75th minute when Jacksonville senior Mladen Dikic scored his team leading 10th goal of the season to even the match at 1-1. Junior Mike Popovic picked up the assist on the Dikic goal.

JU took the lead for the first time just over three minutes later when sophomore Bole Acimovic scored on a diving header off a cross from Popovic at 78:11. The Dolphins looked to have put the game away in the game's 85th minute when a diving header by freshman Michael Blackburn beat the Bulls keeper, only to be cleared off the line by defenseman Casey Stump. The Bulls responded to their new-found life, and after a number of near misses, South Florida evened the score at 2-2 when Brian Alvero converted a pass from Brian Mullins with just :59 remaining on the clock.

During a scoreless first 15 minutes of overtime, South Florida's Albie Curry was removed from the game after receiving a red-card for a dangerous tackle from behind. Playing one man down the rest of the way, the Bulls looked to thwart the Dolphins bid to remain undefeated, but Rak's "golden-goal" salvaged the victory for Jacksonville.

The Dolphins will return to action at the Ashley Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 P.M. when they host Howard University.
