Jacksonville Deals Campbell 3-1 TAAC Men's Soccer Loss
October 2, 1999
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Jacksonville University scored three times in less than eight minutes early in the second half to earn a 3-1 men's soccer victory over Campbell on Saturday at the Eakes Athletic Complex. The 19th-ranked Dolphins saw a 1-0 halftime deficit turn into a 3-1 advantage just 14:05 into the second period on goals by Hope Chiota, Mike Popovic and Bole Acimovic. Jacksonville won its second-straight match to improve to 8-1 on the year and 2-0 in the Trans America Athletic Conference. Campbell lost its fourth-consecutive outing and fell to 1-7, 0-3 in the TAAC.
The Camels struck first when Rafael Guanaes came off the bench and scored in the 44th minute of play. Guanaes finished a left-footed shot from outside the box after Matt Magner and Adam Martin strung together passes to set up the freshman from Brazil. Jacksonville, the defending TAAC champion, answered just 6:23 into the second period when Mike Popovic set up Chiota in the box for the equalizer. Just over five minutes later, Popovic scored what proved to be the game-winner when swept in from the right-flank and beat Camel keeper Phillip Hatcher to the far post. Less than three minutes later, Acimovic finished a counter attack off feeds from Chiota and Mladen Dikic for a two-goal JU edge. Campbell held a 15-13 advantage in shots, but JU keeper Petar Popovic made seven saves, at least three in one-on-one situations.
The Fighting Camels return to action on Wednesday at Coastal Carolina in a 3:00 p.m. kickoff.
