October 20, 1999

BOCA RATON, Fla. - In a dramatic finish, Florida Atlantic University erased a 2-0 second half deficit to defeat Jacksonville University, 3-2, in overtime, in a Trans America Athletic Conference men's soccer match Wednesday. FAU's victory (5-7, 2-3) gave Jacksonville (11-2-1, 4-1) their first loss in conference play.

The winning goal for the Owls came just 1:32 into the first overtime period when FAU's Marcus Hendricksson scored off of a deflected shot by Geir Sandness. "In the first half we didn't expect JU to come at us with so much pressure," said FAU head coach, Kos Donev. "As a result, we were down 2-0 before we could adjust. At the half, we made the adjustments, and the way our team was able to come back shows how much character they have."

Jacksonville began the match with consistent pressure that resulted in a goal just 7:42 into the contest by sophomore Hope Chiota. JU looked like it would head to the intermission with that same 1-0 lead until sophomore Bole Acimovic scored with less than two minutes left in the half. JU went to the break with a 2-0 lead. FAU began pressure of its own in the second half, and it finally paid off with a goal by Stephan Johansson, who scored on a penalty kick at 64:58 to cut the deficit to 2-1.

With less than nine minutes left in regulation, FAU's Geir Sandness scored on a pass from Fredrik Aliris to tie the game at 2-2. The score would remain tied for the remainder of regulation, forcing the overtime session. FAU controlled the ball as the first overtime period began, resulting in Hendricksson's game-winner at 91:32. FAU outshot JU 13-10 in the match.

The Owls next play at Campbell on Saturday, while JU will take on Liberty Friday and Marshall Saturday in a Tournament hosted by Florida International.
