JU defeated By Marshall
October 23, 1999
Miami, FL. - Byron Carmichael scored on a header from short range with one second remaining in regulation as Marshall (7-9-1) upset No. 13 Jacksonville (11-4-1), 2-1, Saturday in the second round of the FIU Golden Panther Classic.
With the score tied and the clock ticking, Andy Dosman's throw in hit Carmichael out in front of the net. Carmichael's score, with 89:59 showing on the clock, was his team-leading seventh of the year. Jacksonville dominated the early going and grabbed a 1-0 lead when Bole Acimovic scored on a diving header at 6:32. Marshall appeared to have tied the score in the 20th minute when Neil Hildenbrand converted a deflection off Dolphins' goalkeeper Petar Popovic but the play was ruled offsides and JU took a 1-0 lead into the half.
Jacksonville's fortunes changed early in the second half, however, when midfielder Mike Popovic was red carded for violent conduct at 61:32. Popovic was ejected from the game and the Dolphins were forced to play one man down the rest of the way. Playing with the advantage, Marshall's offense took on new life. The Thundering Herd took 10 shots in the second half and tied the match at 1-1 when Ian Leggat scored from short range after a crossing pass from Brent Sobczak.
With Marshall's 3-2 win over host Florida International late Friday night, the Herd have assured themselves no worse than second place in the Golden Panther Classic format. Liberty plays FIU later Saturday and a win by the host would give Marshall the championship. A Liberty win would place Marshall second.
Ranked Jacksonville continues its tailspin, losing for the third straight time. The Dolphins are 0-3-1 dating back to October 12. JU will return to TAAC play on Wedneday afternoon at 3:30 when they host Georgia State in a match that will decide the final seeding for the 1999 TAAC Tournament.
