Soccer To Honor Former Coach Dennis Viollet
Sept. 15, 2000
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU/Nike Legends Soccer Classic, which begins Saturday at the Ashley Sports Complex on the JU campus, has been renamed the "Dennis Viollet Memorial Classic" in honor of former Dolphin head coach and international star Dennis Violett. Viollet served as JU's head men's soccer coach from 1990-95.
The Dennis Viollet Memorial Scholarship has also been created to be awarded annually to a JU men's and women's soccer player who exemplifies the academic leadership and athletic excellence that Viollet represented. Starting in the fall of 2001, the annual North Florida/Jacksonville men's soccer match will offer the "Viollet Cup" to be kept by the winning team each year.
"Coach Viollet can be associated with two words, dignity and class, said JU men's and women's head coach Mike Johnson. "We are excited to honor him for his dedication to soccer in Jacksonville and his commitment to Jacksonville University. He is greatly missed and will always be remembered by those whose lives he touched."
As a player, Viollet starred for 17 years in the English First Division, including a 12-year stint with the infamous Manchester United Club and five years with Stoke City where he was an eight-time member of the English All-Star and National Teams. Viollet recorded more than 300 goals in 650 games during his 17-year career, and currently holds the English League single-season record with 32 goals (1960-61).
Viollet came to Jacksonville in 1981 as an assistant coach of the Jacksonville Teamen of the North American Soccer League (NASL). After taking over as head coach in 1983, Viollet led the Teamen to the newly-named American Soccer League Championship (ASL) and was named ASL Coach of the Year. After leaving JU in 1995, Viollet returned to coaching with the Richmond Kickers in 1996 and later the Jacksonville Cyclones of the A-League in 1998-99.
Viollet passed away in the spring of 1999 and is survived by his wife Helen, and daughter, Rachel,
