Rowing earns three medals at The Head of the Hooch

The JU rowing teams took to the water for the first time in two weeks as the Men's Lightweight 8, the Men's Lightweight 4 and the Men's Freshman 8 each earned a silver medal at The Head of the Hooch, Saturday on the Tennessee River in Chatanooga.

"This was the first race of the season for most of our team, so I wasn't disappointed with our results although I would always rather finish first," said director of rowing Jim Mitchell. "These results gave us a good indication of where we are with our training and our line ups and now we have something to work off of."

The Men's Lightweight 4 consisting of coxswain T.J. Urbanek, Tyler Humphrey, Stefan Negaard, Rick McCarson and Charlie Allen finished second with a time of 18:31.4, behind Grand Valley State "A" (18:19.8). The Dolphins finished ahead of Texas, Grand Valley State "B", Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, UCF and North Carolina.

The Men's Lightweight 8 made up of coxswain Anthony Magro, Tyler Humphrey, Stefan Negaard, Rick McCarson, Charlie Allen, Erich Negaard, Lucas Meers, Michael Scully and Kevin Friedlander finished second with a mark of 16:03.9 behind Grand Valley State "A" 15:51.2. The Dolphins finished ahead of Texas, Georgia Tech, Clemson, UCF and Auburn.

The Men's Freshman 8 consisting of coxswain Jamie Goldstein, Dylan Kosten, Kevin Friedlander, Erich Negaard, Christopher Barse, Ian Wadworth, Zach Hosford, John Gerety and Ryan Kilpatrick also placed second with a time of 17:13.3 behind Marietta College (16:45.4). The Dolphins finished ahead of Texas, Grand Valley State, UCF and Georgia Tech.

JU will next compete in the Head of the South on Nov. 10 in Augusta, Ga., to close out the 2007 Fall Schedule.
