Men's Soccer Tabbed Third In 2003 A-Sun Preseason Poll

Aug. 25, 2003

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU men's soccer team was picked to finish third in the 2003 Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, released by the league office today. The Dolphins return 20 players, including seven starters, from the team which finished 10-6-2 overall (5-2-1 A-Sun) last year and reached the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Championship.

UCF, the defending A-Sun champions, was tabbed as the favorite, while defending regular-season champion Mercer was picked to finish second. JU is followed in the poll by Stetson, Georgia State, Florida Atlantic, Campbell, Belmont, Gardner-Webb and Lipscomb, respectively.

Led by First-Team A-Sun All-Conference goalkeeper Greg Williams (Hopewell, N.Y.) and all-conference defender Nick Comerford (Gainesville, Fla.), JU held its opponents to 1.08 goals per game last year, the lowest goals against average in the 45-year history of the Dolphin men's soccer program. The Dolphins also return junior forward Richard Blackburn (Jacksonville/Orange Park), a second-team all-league selection, who led the team with eight goals and 10 assists last year.

The Dolphins kick off the regular season against North Florida in the Dennis Viollet Memorial Cup at the Eagle Harbor Soccer Complex in Orange Park on Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
