Men's Soccer Fights for 1-1 Tie against Belmont
Oct. 16, 2004
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Lonnie Bascome (Hamilton, Bermuda) scored his first career goal, but a goal by J.P. Rodrigues off a Belmont corner kick evened the match, where it remained through the final 38 minutes of play, as Jacksonville University (6-5-1, 2-2-1 A-Sun) tied Belmont, 1-1, at the Ashley Sports Complex during homecoming Saturday afternoon. Senior midfielder Richard Blackburn (Orange Park, Fla.) tallied his league-leading sixth assist in the contest for the Dolphins.
JU scored their goal in the 66th minute, when Bascome headed in the corner from Blackburn. The Bruins answered six minutes later, when Rodrigues knocked in the rebound off of Bo Konigsmark's shot, which was created by a Belmont corner kick.
The Dolphins let several scoring chances slip away, including a penalty kick by sophomore forward Tommy Krizanovic (Jacksonville/Englewood) that Belmont keeper Matt Renfrow knocked away from goal in the 19th minute. In all, JU had 13 shots on goal, with Renfrow grabbing nine saves and the Bruin defense knocking away three other shots.
JU took 22 shots in the match, compared to the Bruins' 15. The Dolphins also had the advantage on corner kicks, 8-4. Senior goalkeeper Greg Williams (Hopewell, N.Y.) had three saves in the match. The Dolphins are now 1-2-1 in overtime matches in 2004.
