Men's soccer picked fourth in Atlantic Sun preseason poll

Aug. 7, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University men's soccer team was picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic Sun Conference, according to the preseason coaches poll released by the league office on Monday.

"Based on last year's performance, that is an accurate position for us," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "Since every team was so close to the top last year, the poll has no bearing on how the season will turn out. I'm excited about our position because it allows us to be the hunter not the hunted."

Campbell was selected to place first with 55 votes, while defending champion Stetson, was in a close second with 54 votes. Mercer (53) was picked third and Jacksonville is tied with Belmont to finish fourth with 34 votes. Gardner-Webb (24), Lipscomb (19) and North Florida (15) make up the rest of the poll.

The Dolphins return eight starters this season which finished 7-10-2 in 2005 and earned a berth in the A-Sun tournament. Among the starters returning are senior Tommy Krizanovic, junior Anton Axelsson and sophomore Patrik Werner, who each earned all-conference accolades last season.

In 2005, the Dolphins led the conference in every offensive category with the help of Krizanovic's career-high 17 goals.

The Dolphins begin the 2006 season with an exhibition match against FIT-Melbourne at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, in Melbourne, Fla.
