Aug. 25, 2006
GREENSBORO, N.C. - No. 20 ranked UNC-Greensboro scored two goals in the final ten minutes to down the Jacksonville University men's soccer team, 4-2, in the season opener on Friday night in Greensboro, N.C.
The Spartans (1-0) three goals in the final 12-minutes of the game, while the Dolphins (0-1) managed 12 shots on goal.
"It was a tough loss to open the season," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "We battled hard to come back, but they out lasted us in the end. We will fix up some of our first game mistakes and come back fresh to face Elon."
With the scored tied at 2-2 in the second half, Henning Jonasson scored the game-winning goal for the Spartans with less than six minutes remaining on an assist by Michael Richardson. Jonasson would record an assist on Michael Fitzgerald's second goal of the game with less than three minutes in the game to quash any Dolphins' comeback.
Trailing 2-1 in the second half, Richardson tied the game for the Spartans by scoring on a penalty kick at the 12-minute mark.
Senior Tommy Krizanovic gave the Dolphins their only lead of the game by scoring on a penalty kick at the 37-minute mark of the second half.
The Spartans grabbed the initial lead in the first half when Fitzgerald scored on an assist from Travis Young less than five minutes into the game.
Senior Chad Comroe recorded nine saves in goal for the Dolphins.
The Dolphins return to action on Sunday in Rock Hill, S.C. against Elon at 3 p.m.
