Men's Tennis Performs Well In Opening Rounds Of ITA Region III

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Sophomore Martin Hehensteiger (Schechen, Germany) won both of his qualifying matches on Thursday and added another win in the round of 128 on Friday, while junior Ben Birkmann (Bremen, Germany) won an opening round match as the Dolphins began play at the ITA Region III at Memphis University.
Hehensteiger defeated Clayton Langheim of Troy State, 6-1, 6-2, and Patrizio Maucci of Tulane, 6-3, 6-1, in the qualifying round to reach the main draw. In the main draw, Hehensteiger won in the round of 128 over Andreas Siljestrom of Middle Tennessee State, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Birkmann also won his first round match, defeating Charles Van Swelm of Troy State, 6-2, 6-2. Both players fell in the round of 64, as Hehensteiger fell to No. 9 Scott Brown of Vanderbilt, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Birkmann dropped a hard-fought match to No. 17 Ken Skupski of LSU, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
In doubles, Birkmann and Hehensteiger won in the round of 64, defeating Lux and Mezey of Southern Miss, 8-4. They will take on Andrew Colombo and Gabor Zoltan Pelva of Auburn on Saturday, who are seeded first in the draw and ranked fourth nationally.
The Dolphins continue play on Saturday at the ITA Region III in Memphis.
