Men's Tennis Defeats Florida Atlantic, Loses to No. 34 Miami in Weekend Action

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU men's tennis team defeated Florida Atlantic, 4-3, before falling to Miami, 6-1 in Boca Raton and Coral Gables in weekend action. Junior Ben Birkmann (Bremen, Germany) went 2-0 with a No. 1 singles win at FAU and a No. 2 singles win against Miami. Sophomore Martin Hehensteiger (Schechen, Germany) and freshman Neil Sehgal (Cincinnati, Ohio) teamed up to go 2-0 as well, winning at No. 2 doubles in both matches.
JU took the doubles point against Florida Atlantic with wins by Hehensteiger and Sehgal at No. 2 doubles and junior Andres Rojas (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and freshman Peter Wietrak (Bensalem, Pa.) at No. 3 doubles. The Owls rebounded by taking the No. 5 and No. 3 singles matches, forcing a 2-2 tie when Birkmann, Hehensteiger and junior Christoph Mueller (Waldsassen, Germany) swept their singles matches to earn JU the 4-3 win.
JU dropped the doubles point to the No. 34 Hurricanes, despite an impressive win by Hehensteiger and Sehgal at No. 2 doubles. Only Birkmann was able to win his singles match as Miami went on to win, 6-1.
JU will host Mercer on Saturday, Feb. 28 at noon at the Alexander Brest Tennis Complex.
