Men's Tennis defeats Appalachian State, 4-3

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU men's tennis team won 3-of-6 singles matches and captured the double point to earn its fifth win of the season defeating Appalachian State, 4-3, after Neil Sehgal (Cincinnati, Ohio) won over Steve Mantzouns at No. 5 singles (3-6, 6-3, 6-2), Monday afternoon at the Alexander Brest Tennis Complex.
JU (5-6) sophomore Martin Hehensteiger (Schechen, Germany) won at No. 1 singles in two sets defeating Dimitrer Dimitrov, 6-0, 6-4. Junior Ben Birkmann (Bremen, Germany) won at No. 2 singles over Alex Probst, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Peter Wietrak (Bensalem, Pa.) fell to Ben Shuster at No. 3 singles, 3-0, def., while junior Christoph Mueller (Waldsassen, Germany) lost at No. 4 singles to Andrew Waters, 6-7, 5-0 def. Freshman Brian Garfield (Los Gatos, Ca.) also fell at No. 6 singles to Jason Nius, 6-3, 6-1.
Birkmann and Mueller earned the win in No. 1 doubles over Dimtrov and Shuster, 8-1. Hehensteiger and Sehgal combined to defeat Probst and Waters at No. 2 doubles, 8-3.
JU will play UT-Chattanooga on Tuesday, March 9 at 1:00 p.m. at the Alexander Brest Tennis Complex.
