Birkmann and Hehensteiger Earn Tennis Academic All-America Honors

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU senior Ben Birkmann (Bremen, Germany) earned First-Team District III Academic All-America honors, while sophomore Martin Hehensteiger (Schechen, Germany) earned District III Second-Team Academic All-America honors, as announced by the College Sports Information Director's Association Thursday. Birkmann and Hehensteiger are the third and fourth JU student-athletes to earn Academic All-America awards this year, joining senior softball player Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) and national First-Team Academic All-American senior women's soccer player Inge Heiremans (Tremelo, Belgium). Birkmann and Korcak have advanced to the national ballot where they have the opportunity to join Heiremans on the national Academic All-America team.

JU has had a banner year for academic honors, garnering four CoSIDA Academic All-America awards, 187 Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference honors, 33 Pioneer League Academic Honor Roll honors and one National Scholar-Athlete Award for junior rower Lauren Calhoun (Baltimore, Md.).

Birkmann earned Atlantic Sun Second-Team All-Conference honors after posting a 17-6 record at No. 2 singles and a 15-7 mark in doubles play, graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA. He was named to the President's Honor Roll five times, is a three-time Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference honoree and is the recipient of the 2004 University Award, given to the JU student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA. In addition, Birkmann was the 2002 and 2003 JU Tennis MVP. In 2003, Birkmann earned District III Second-Team Academic All-America honors along with First-Team Atlantic Sun All-Conference honors.

Hehensteiger earned First-Team Atlantic Sun All-Conference honors after posting a 20-7 record in singles play and a 19-4 mark at doubles, en route to team MVP honors in 2004. He was named to the President's Honor Roll in 2002 and earned Dean's List honors in 2003, while garnering two Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference honors. Hehensteiger also earned Second-Team Atlantic Sun All-Conference and All-Freshman honors in 2003.

CoSIDA Academic All-America winners for track and field and cross country are due to be released June 3.
