Softball Swept by South Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team was shutout, 6-0 and 2-0, by South Florida in a doubleheader in non-conference action at the JU Softball Complex Saturday afternoon. The Bulls held the Dolphins to just five hits in the doubleheader. With the losses JU falls to 0-3 on the season, while it was the season opener for South Florida. Freshmen Jill Bandhauer (Crystal River, Fla.) and Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.) led the Dolphins with two hits each.
South Florida broke open a 1-0 lead in the sixth scoring five runs, highlighted by a three-run double by Krista Holle, to put the game one out of reach and win easily. Bulls' starter Leigh Ann Ellis (1-0) pitched a complete game giving up only two hits while striking out 11. Junior Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) picked up the loss for the Dolphins, pitching a complete game and striking out three.
In game two, South Florida was able to gain the early advantage as Kattrina Dowd led off the game with a bunt single, followed by a Stephanie Roberts walk. With one out, Courtney Lewellen singled up the middle scoring Dowd giving USF the 1-0 lead. South Florida tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as Lewellen delivered a two-out RBI single making it 2-0. Corin Tassio (1-0) held the Dolphin bats in check the entire game, pitching a complete game allowing three hits while striking out four. JU starter Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) also pitched a complete game giving up only two runs and striking out five.
The Dolphins return to action at the Triple Crown Classic hosted by UCF, Feb. 7-9, in St. Augustine, Fla.. JU plays Evansville and Arkansas on Friday, Feb. 7 and Tennessee on Saturday, Feb. 8.
