Tennessee Takes Two From Softball at UCF/Triple Crown Classic
Feb. 8, 2003
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team lost both of its game to Tennessee, 10-2 and 6-1, Saturday in its second day of action at the UCF/Triple Crown Classic at Treaty Park in St. Augustine, Fla. The Dolphins were scheduled to face the Lady Volunteers in game one, but found themselves playing them once again as the tournament split into bracket play. JU (1-6) lost its first game yesterday to Evansville, 6-5, but defeated Arkansas, 3-2, in eight innings in the nightcap for its first victory of the season.
In game one, Tennessee scored eight runs in the second inning, highlighted by three home runs, and the Dolphins didn't help matters committing five errors. JU was able to get on the board in the third as freshman Melissa Coburn (Crystal River, Fla.) doubled and scored off a Monica McGee (Starke, Fla.) single, making it 8-1. Tennessee scored two more runs in the fourth and the game was stopped in the fifth inning because of the eight-run mercy rule.
Coburn led the Dolphins offensively going 2-for-2 with a double, her first collegiate home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Junior Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) (1-2) lasted only 2.0 innings giving up eight runs, while striking out three, to earn the loss.
In the Dolphins afternoon game, Tennessee once again jumped out to an early lead scoring runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. JU would score its only run in the sixth as McGee scored on a Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.) sacrifice fly, making it 6-1.
Starry went 2-for-3, while juniors Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) and Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) each had a hit apiece. Freshman Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) (0-4) picked up the loss tossing 4.1 innings giving up five earned runs.
JU returns to action at the UCF/Triple Crown Classic tomorrow morning for its final game against Ole Miss at 8:30 a.m. at Treaty Park in St. Augustine.
