Feb. 16, 2003
TAMPA, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team battled No. 17 Notre Dame to a near draw Sunday, but the Irish proved to be too much for the young Dolphins, winning 2-1 in the Dolphins' third game at the USF/Wilson Tournament hosted by South Florida at the USF Softball Field. JU had several chances to overtake Notre Dame, but were unable to capitalize stranding 11 runners on base. The Dolphins (2-8) afternoon game against Rhode Island was canceled due to rain.
The Irish broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning as Andrea Loman led off the inning with a walk and later stole second. With one out, Megan Ruthrauff doubled to left field scoring Loman, making it 1-0 Notre Dame. Sara Schoonaert came in to pinch run for Ruthrauff and advanced to third on a passed ball. Mallorie Lenn stepped to the plate and delivered a sacrifice fly to center field allowing Schoonaert to score giving Notre Dame a two-run lead.
JU was finally able to break through in the fifth, cutting the Irish's lead in half. Junior Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) led off the inning with a single to left and after Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.) walked and freshman Jill Bandhauer (Crystal River, Fla.) struck out, junior Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) singled up the middle, scoring Starry making it 2-1.
The Dolphins stranded at least one runner on base in each of the first five innings, leaving 11 total on base for the game. Freshman Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) (0-6) pitched her second consecutive complete game, but suffered the loss giving up an earned run, while striking out two.
JU faces Kent State tomorrow in its final game at 10:00 a.m. at the USF/Wilson Tournament hosted by South Florida at the USF Softball Field.
