Feb. 17, 2003
TAMPA, Fla. - Jacksonville University junior Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout, while junior Monica McGee (Starke, Fla.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Dolphins past Kent State, 5-0, Monday in the Dolphins' final game at the USF/Wilson Invitational hosted by South Florida at the USF Softball Field. JU (3-8) finished 2-2 for the tournament, defeating Hofstra, 3-1, Saturday in its first game.
JU exploded out of the gate scoring four runs in the first inning. Junior Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) led off the inning with a walk and later scored the Dolphins' first run on a wild pitch. With two outs, McGee singled home Jill Bandhauer (Crystal River, Fla.) and freshman Lisa Dronkers (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) delivered her first collegiate hit, a single down the left field line, plating McGee and Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) giving JU a 4-0 advantage.
Starry (3-2) was able to hold the Golden Flashes' offense in check the entire game, scattering four hits over 7.0 innings, while striking out two to earn her second-consecutive victory. The Dolphins tacked on one more run in the seventh as McGee had had her third hit of the game, an RBI bunt single, scoring Starry.
Dronkers went 1-for-3 with two RBI leading the Dolphins offensively, while freshman Ashley Houston (Glen St. Mary, Fla.), Bandhauer and Palumbo each had a hit.
JU travels to Daytona Beach, Fla., for a doubleheader against Bethune-Cookman Wednesday afternoon at Sunnyland Park at 4:00 p.m.
