Softball Breezes Past Savannah St., 17-1, at Bulldog Classic

NORMAL, Ala. - The Jacksonville University softball team defeated Savannah State, 17-1, Sunday morning in five innings in its final game at the Bulldog Classic hosted by Alabama A&M at Bulldog Field. Freshman Amanda Deen (Jacksonville/Baldwin) won her second-straight decision, tossing a complete-game one-hitter, and the Dolphins hammered out 20 hits in scoring at least three runs in each of the first four innings. Freshmen Jill Bandhauer (Crystal River, Fla.), Melissa Coburn (Crystal River, Fla.) and Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.), who tossed a no-hitter yesterday against the host Bulldogs, were named to the all-tournament team.

JU (8-10) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning as junior lead-off hitter Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) reached on an error and freshman Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.) drove her home with a single to center field. Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) tripled to right center scoring Palumbo and later scored on a single from Bandhauer to make it 3-0. After Coburn singled and Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, junior Ronda Campo (Kirkland, Wash.) singled scoring Bandhauer. Crystal Howland (Live Oak, Fla.) had an RBI fielder's choice and Palumbo added a two-run single to cap off the scoring.

The Dolphins scored three more runs in the second highlighted by an RBI double from Coburn and an RBI single from Howland. Freshman Lisa Dronkers (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) and Howland added RBI singles and Campo collected her second RBI on a fielder's choice in third as the Dolphins built a 13-1 lead. JU tacked on four more runs in the fourth as Coburn and Bandhauer had RBI singles and Dronkers delivered a two-run double to left center.

Deen (2-0) pitched her second-straight complete-game, allowing one earned run while striking out three. Bandhauer finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored, while Palumbo and Coburn each recorded three hits. Howland and Dronkers each had a career-high three RBI to lead the Dolphins.

JU returns to action Wednesday, Mar. 5 hosting Georgia State in an Atlantic Sun doubleheader at the JU Softball Complex at 1:00 p.m. JU's scheduled game against Pittsburgh on Monday, March 3 was canceled due to inclement field conditions.
