March 9, 2003
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team defeated Austin Peay, 2-0, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at the JU Softball Complex. The Dolphins scored single runs in the second and third innings, respectively, and freshman Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) pitched her third shutout in her last four games to earn her fourth victory of the season. With the win, JU improves to 10-13 overall. The game was originally scheduled as a doubleheader, but rain forced the game to start later in the afternoon and only a single game was played.
After a scoreless first inning, JU took the lead in the second as junior Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) drew a one-out walk and later advanced to second on a groundout. Junior Monica McGee (Starke, Fla.) walked and Cadarette stole third to put runners on the corners with two outs. The Dolphins attempted a double steal and Cadarette was able to score after Lady Govs' catcher Christina Garza threw the ball into center field in attempt to throw out McGee at second.
The Dolphins extended their lead in the third as shortstop Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) led off the inning with single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.). Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) reached on an error allowing Korcak to advance to third and freshman Jill Bandhauer (Crystal River, Fla.) hit a sharp liner back at Lady Govs' pitcher Holly Ricketts, who was unable to make the catch, and Korcak scored to make it 2-0 Dolphins.
Dobson (4-8) pitched her eighth-consecutive complete game and was able to escape several jams, while recording seven strikeouts. Korcak led the Dolphins at the plate finishing 2-for-3 with a double and extending her hitting streak to four games, while Bandhauer went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
JU finishes its seven-game homestand Monday hosting Winthrop in a non-conference doubleheader at the JU Softball Complex at 2 p.m.
