Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team lost both games of a non-conference doubleheader to Winthrop Monday afternoon at the JU Softball Complex. Freshman catcher Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and junior Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) each had three hits in the doubleheader, while junior first baseman Ronda Campo (Kirkland, Wash.) finished 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Dolphins in game one. Starry and freshman Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) both pitched complete games for the Dolphins, but JU (10-15) was unable to string together back-to-back hits to jump start its offense in either game.

In the opening game, Winthrop took the early lead in the first as Sarah Bargeron reached on an error from third baseman Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) with one out and later stole second. Kati Agee drove in Bargeron with a single down the left field line to make it 1-0 Lady Eagles. The Dolphins answered in the fourth as Cadarette reached on an error from second baseman Katie Kipisz. Cadarette was able to advance to second on a groundout and reached third on a passed ball and Campo hit a looping single over first baseman Stephanie Turney's head down the right field line allowing Cadarette to score to tie the game at 1-1.

The Lady Eagles countered in the top of the fifth as Turney was able to score the winning run on a miscue from Cadarette. Winthrop starter Kelli Johnson earned the win, pitching a complete game, while scattering eight hits.

Junior Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) led JU going 2-for-3 and extending her hitting streak to five games, while Starry (4-6) finished 2-for-4, but ended up the hard-luck loser pitching a complete game and striking out four.

In the nightcap, JU stranded nine runners on base and had several chances to break the game open, but all attempts were unsuccessful as the Lady Eagles' edged the Dolphins 1-0. Winthrop broke the scoreless tie in the fourth as Agee delivered a sacrifice fly scoring Bargeron for the game's only run. Lady Eagles' starter Shahna Ashard scattered six hits over 7.0 innings of work to pick up the victory.

Palumbo led JU offensively finishing 2-for-4, while Starry, Cadarette, Jill Bandhauer (Crystal River, Fla.) and Ashley Houston (Glen St. Mary, Fla.) had a hit apiece. Dolphins' starter Dobson (4-9) picked up the loss as she tossed a complete game giving up only one run and recording three strikeouts.

JU travels to Tallahassee, Fla., Thursday for a tournament hosted by Florida A&M. The Dolphins play South Carolina State at noon and Alabama A&M at 2 p.m. Friday and play the host Rattlers on Saturday at 2 p.m.
