Softball Tops Florida A&M, 5-2; Advances to Championship Game at Lady Rattler Invitational
March 15, 2003
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Jacksonville University junior Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) tossed a complete game, while going 2-for-4 with an RBI at the plate to lead the Dolphins past Florida A&M, 5-2, Saturday to place JU in the championship game of the Lady Rattler Invitational hosted by Florida A&M. JU (13-16) will face South Carolina St., who the Dolphins defeated, 3-1, on Friday, for the championship tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Lady Rattler Softball Complex.
The Dolphins broke a scoreless tie in the fourth as junior Monica McGee (Starke, Fla.) had an RBI single up the middle with the bases loaded to score Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) and shortstop Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) drove home the Dolphins' second run with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. JU made it 3-0 in the fifth as catcher Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.) singled to lead off the inning and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Starry (6-6) doubled to right field allowing Palumbo to score to give the Dolphins a 3-0 advantage.
JU increased its lead the very next inning as McGee delivered a two-out single and later scored on a triple from Korcak. Palumbo added an RBI single to cap the Dolphins' scoring as they held a commanding 5-0 lead. The Lady Rattlers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-2, but that would be as close as they got as they stranded two runners on base in the seventh.
In the Dolphins' first game against the Lady Rattlers, FAMU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first as Eria Williams scored on an error from rightfielder Jill Bandhauer (Crystal River, Fla.) and pitcher Danielle Brown added an RBI double. JU answered right back in the second as freshman Lisa Dronkers (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) drew a one-out walk and later scored on a triple from Ashley Houston (Glen St. Mary, Fla.). First baseman Ronda Campo (Kirkland, Wash.) drove in Houston with a groundout to tie the game, 2-2.
After taking a 3-2 lead in the second, the Lady Rattlers broke the game open in the fourth scoring five runs highlighted by Elisha Scott's three-run double to take an 8-2 lead. Freshman Melissa Coburn (Crystal River, Fla.) homered to left field to lead off the sixth to make it 8-3, but the Lady Rattlers scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach. JU would score one more run in the seventh to make it 10-4 as Starry doubled to left field scoring McGee.
Brown led the Lady Rattlers finishing 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, while also picking up the complete-game win.
Dolphins' starter Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) (5-10) earned the loss giving up four runs in 3.0 innings of work. Palumbo went 2-for-3, while Starry finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double.
JU faces South Carolina St. in the championship game of the Lady Rattler Invitational Sunday at the Lady Rattler Softball Complex at 1 p.m.
