Softball Claims Lady Rattler Invitational Championship with 9-3 Victory Over South Carolina St.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team defeated South Carolina St., 9-3, Sunday afternoon to win the Lady Rattler Invitational hosted by Florida A&M at the Lady Rattler Softball Complex. Junior Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) won her second-straight decision pitching a complete game, while freshman Jill Bandhauer (Crystal River, Fla.) went 3-for-4 with a homerun and three RBI. The Dolphins improve to 14-16 overall on the season and now prepare for an Atlantic Sun road trip.
JU began the game with a bang as Bandhauer hit a three-run homerun to left center in the first inning to give the Dolphins a quick 3-0 lead. The Lady Bulldogs battled right back scoring two runs in the third with Lindsey Walker collecting an RBI single and an errant throw to home plate by rightfielder Lisa Dronkers (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) allowed Teresa Wright to score to make it 3-2.
The Dolphins began to extend their lead in the fifth as third baseman Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) and Dronkers each had RBI singles to make it 5-2. Junior Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) led off the sixth with her fourth triple of the season and later scored as catcher Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.) delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Dolphins a four-run advantage. JU tacked on three more runs in the seventh highlighted by a two-run single from Palumbo to increase its margin to 9-2.
Starry (7-6) struck out five without giving up a walk in tossing her second-consecutive complete game, while also going 3-for-5 at the plate. Palumbo led a balanced offensive attack for JU finishing 2-for-4 with three RBI as eight Dolphins had at least one hit. Cadarette finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Dronkers went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
JU returns to action Thursday, March 20 traveling to Jacksonville State for an A-Sun doubleheader at University Field at 4 p.m.
