Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Jacksonville University softball team dropped both games of an Atlantic Sun doubleheader to Samford, 4-3 in 10 innings and 8-2, Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Field. The Dolphins fall to 16-20 overall, 5-7 in A-Sun play.

Junior shortstop Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) finished 4-for-9 in the doubleheader with a run scored to lead the Dolphins. JU finishes its six-game road trip 2-4, earning conference victories against Jacksonville St. on Thursday and Belmont on Friday.

In the series opener, the Bulldogs took the lead in the first inning as Kelly Smith had an RBI double and Michelle Wright delivered an RBI single to make it 2-0. JU managed to take the lead in its half of the second as Bulldogs' starter Erin Landsburg walked the bases loaded and Monica McGee (Starke, Fla.) had her first of three infield singles to score third baseman Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood). A fielding error by Smith allowed Melissa Coburn (Crystal River, Fla.) to score and with two outs, catcher Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.) made it 3-2 Dolphins with an RBI single to right field.

Samford tied the game in the fifth as Landsburg had a sacrifice fly to make it 3-3. Both teams failed to score before the end of the seventh and the Bulldogs' nearly won the game in the eighth, but rightfielder Jill Bandhauer (Crystal River, Fla.) made a game-saving catch to end the threat. Samford's Trisha Holman was placed at second at the start of the 10th in compliance with the international tiebreak rule and Holman immediately stole third base and was able to score the winning run when Palumbo's throw to third skipped away.

Landsburg earned the win for the Bulldogs, tossing a complete game with nine strikeouts, while Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

McGee led JU offensively going 3-for-4 with an RBI and Palumbo finished 2-for-5 with an RBI. Junior Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) (9-7) suffered the loss, her first in six starts, giving up three earned runs, while recording three strikeouts.

In the second game, Samford once again took the lead first scoring three runs in the second inning. The Dolphins battled back in the third as Korcak led off the inning with a single and later advanced to third after a stolen base and a wild pitch. An illegal pitch from Landsburg permitted Korcak to score and Starry scored the second run as a result of an error from Smith at second base to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Bulldogs would not be denied though as they scored a single run in the third to take a 4-2 lead and later tacked on four more runs in the sixth to take a commanding 8-2 lead.

Korcak led JU at the plate finishing 3-for-4 with a run, while Palumbo, Starry, Coburn, Cadarette and first baseman Ronda Campo (Kirkland, Wash.) each had a hit. Freshman Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) (5-13) picked up the loss giving up eight runs, just four earned, while striking out six.

JU returns to action Wednesday traveling to Tampa, Fla., to take on the South Florida Bulls in a non-conference doubleheader at 5 p.m.
