JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team was swept by Troy State, 4-2 and 2-1, in Atlantic Sun play Friday afternoon at the JU Softball Complex. Freshman rightfielder Jill Bandhauer (Crystal River, Fla.) led the Dolphins (17-25, 6-10 A-Sun) offensively finishing with four hits in the two games, in addition to scoring a run in each game.
In the nightcap, JU broke a scoreless tie in the sixth as Bandhauer led off the inning with her second single of the game and later advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from third baseman Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood). Bandhauer reached third on second baseman Ashley Houston's (Glen St. Mary, Fla.) third sacrifice bunt of the game and was able to score when Lady Trojans' starter Kacie Flinn uncorked a wild pitch to give JU a slim 1-0 advantage.
Troy State began its rally in the seventh leading off with back-to-back singles from Molly Homer and Bonnie Belin. A single to center field from Colleen McKee allowed Homer to score to tie the game and a sacrifice fly from Jessie Buehler brought home pinch runner Ashley Floyd for the game-winning run.
Bandhauer finished 2-for-3 with a run, while junior Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) went 2-for-4 and Cadarette went 2-for-2. Junior Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) (10-9) suffered the loss pitching a complete game giving up two runs, while recording five strikeouts.
The Lady Trojans scored single runs in the first and third innings in the opening game to take an early 2-0 lead highlighted by Melissa Homer's home run to left field in the third. The Dolphins managed to cut the Lady Trojans' lead in half in the sixth as Bandhauer led off the inning with a double and later scored on a sacrifice bunt from Cadarette coupled with a throwing error on third baseman Sally Jones to make it 2-1.
Troy State added some insurance in the seventh scoring two runs as Erin Flater delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Jenny Boyd and Belin added an RBI single. Korcak hit her conference-leading fifth triple down the left field line with one out in the seventh and a groundout from Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.) allowed Korcak to score to make it 4-2.
Bandhauer led JU at the plate finishing 2-for-3 with a run, while Palumbo went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Korcak went 1-for-4 with a triple. Freshman Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) (5-16) earned the loss tossing a complete game allowing four runs and eight walks with seven strikeouts.
