JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University junior Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) tossed a perfect game in the Dolphins' opening tilt against Savannah St. Friday as JU pounded the Tigers, 13-0, in five innings in non-conference action from the JU Softball Complex. In game two, freshman Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) pitched her second no-hitter of the season as JU (23-27) won, 8-0, in five innings.
Junior shortstop Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) led the Dolphins offensively in game one, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Starry and first baseman Ronda Campo (Kirkland, Wash.) each went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Freshman Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and third baseman Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) had two RBI apiece. Freshman catcher Jill Bandhauer (Crystal River, Fla.) led JU at the plate in game two as she finished 2-for-2 with her third home run of the season and two RBI, while junior Monica McGee (Starke, Fla.) went 3-for-3.
JU jumped all over the Tigers in the first inning in the series opener scoring seven runs. Korcak led off the inning with a single and later scored on a triple from Palumbo. Starry doubled to center field to plate Palumbo and later scored on sacrifice fly from Cadarette to make it 3-0. Bandhauer was hit by a pitch, while freshman Melissa Coburn (Crystal River, Fla.) singled and McGee walked to load the bases for Campo, who singled home all three to put JU ahead 6-0. An RBI groundout from Korcak capped off the scoring to give the Dolphins a 7-0 lead.
The Dolphins scored four more runs in the third highlighted by Starry's two-run single and two more in the fourth with Korcak and Palumbo collecting RBI's.
Starry (12-10) struck out a season-high 10 to earn her team-leading 12th victory of the season en route to tossing the Dolphins' first perfect game in their inaugural season.
In the second game, JU opened up the scoring once again in the first as Bandhauer had an RBI double that scored Palumbo and an errant throw from leftfielder Crystal Martin allowed Starry to score. Cadarette followed with an RBI groundout to plate Bandhauer to make it 3-0. The Dolphins scored two more runs in the third as freshman Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) had an RBI and later scored on an error from shortstop Teronica Miller to make it 6-0. Bandhauer led off the fourth with a solo shot to left field, her third of the season, and Dobson collected her second RBI of the game with a groundout to give the Dolphins an 8-0 cushion.
Dobson (9-17) had her own perfect game going until the fifth inning when she hit catcher Michelle Caleb and walked Kathleen Brand, but did tie her season-high in strikeouts with 12 and struck out 10 or more batters for the fourth time in her last five games, while also finishing 1-for-3 with two RBI.
