April 13, 2003
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team dropped both games of an Atlantic Sun doubleheader to UCF, 4-0 and 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the UCF Softball Complex in Orlando, Fla. Junior shortstop Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) led the Dolphins (23-29, 6-14 A-Sun) at the plate finishing with three hits on the afternoon.
In the opening game, UCF broke a scoreless tie in the third inning as Rachelle Schmidt reached on a dropped pop fly from Korcak and later scored on a single from Stephanie Best to make it 1-0. The Golden Knights continued to build their lead in the fifth as Schmidt delivered a one-out double and Best stepped to the plate with two outs and belted a home run over the left field fence to give UCF a 3-0 lead. UCF added a single run in the sixth to make it 4-0 as Nikki Green scored on a sacrifice fly from Kaycee Clark.
Golden Knights' starter Dottie Cupp went the distance, allowing just one hit while striking out seven, to earn the win. Best finished 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to lead UCF.
Korcak had the Dolphins' lone hit in the fourth, an infield single, and also reached base in the seventh on an error from Best. Junior Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) (12-11) gave up three earned runs and struck five in the loss.
In the nightcap, UCF scored three runs in the bottom half of its second inning as Lindsay Oakley had a two-run double and later scored on a wild pitch to go up 3-0. The Dolphins countered in the third as first baseman Ronda Campo (Kirkland, Wash.) reached on an error from Best and advanced to second on sac bunt from freshman Ashley Houston (Glen St. Mary, Fla.). With one out, Korcak hit her second infield single in as many at-bats to put runners on the corners and a fielder's choice from catcher Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.) brought home Campo to make it 3-1.
UCF would not be denied though as it tacked on three more runs in the fourth to take a deciding 6-1 lead. JU threatened in the seventh as Campo reached on an error from third baseman Jen Whitley with two outs and Houston followed with a single, but Golden Knights' starter Taylor Sawyer retired the final batter to close out the game.
Korcak finished 2-for-4 with a pair of infield singles, while Palumbo finished with an RBI and her conference-leading 23rd sacrifice hit. Freshman Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) recorded two strikeouts, but allowed six runs in 6.0 innings of work to earn the loss.
JU returns to action Thursday when it travels to Boca Raton, Fla., for an Atlantic Sun doubleheader with Florida Atlantic at FAU Field at 5 p.m.
