BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team lost both games of an Atlantic Sun doubleheader to Florida Atlantic, 6-3 and 8-2, Thursday afternoon at the FAU Softball Field in Boca Raton, Fla., in its final conference series of the season. Juniors Monica McGee (Starke, Fla.) and Ronda Campo (Kirkland, Wash.) each finished with three hits and an RBI in the doubleheader to pace the Dolphins (23-31, 6-16 A-Sun) offensively.

In the opening game, JU vaulted ahead in the third inning as Campo led off with a single up the middle and McGee followed with an infield single to put runners on first and second. With one out, freshman catcher Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.) laced a double to right center to plate Campo and McGee to give the Dolphins a 2-0 lead. The Owls answered in their half of the third scoring two runs as Jenn Piazza and Jessica Braggins delivered RBI singles to tie the game at 2-2.

FAU nudged out in front in the fifth as Owls' starter Candice Freel helped her own cause with an RBI double to make it 3-2. JU countered in the sixth as freshman Jill Bandhauer (Crystal River, Fla.) singled and later scored on a double from Melissa Coburn (Crystal River, Fla.) to knot the score at 3-3. But the Owls proved to be too much for the Dolphins taking a 6-3 lead in their half of the sixth highlighted by Pam Mazarella's line-drive, two-run, home run to take a 6-3 advantage.

Palumbo finished 1-for-4 with two RBI and a double, while McGee went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the first game. Coburn finished 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Campo and Bandhauer each went 1-for-3 with a run. Junior Bridget Starry (San Diego, Calif.) earned the loss for the Dolphins giving up five earned runs in 6.0 innings of work, while recording four strikeouts.

FAU jumped out in front in the second inning in game two as Ebony Gray had a two-run triple and Jennifer Cavanaugh and Amy Bellisari each drove in a run to make it 4-0 Owls. Trailing 5-0 in the fifth, Campo delivered a one-out single and later scored on an infield single from McGee to cut the Owls lead to 5-1.

After FAU scored three more runs in its half of the fifth to go up 8-1, the Dolphins added another run in the sixth as Palumbo led off with a single and Starry followed with a double to right field. With two outs, Campo hit a sharp single through the right side to score Palumbo and make it 8-2.

Campo led JU at the plate in the nightcap finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Starry went 2-for-3 with her 15th double of the season. Freshman Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) allowed eight runs over 6.0 innings to pick up the loss.

JU finishes its inaugural season when it travels to Tallahassee, Fla., Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader with No. 14 Florida State at the Seminole Softball Complex at 1 p.m. The game can be followed on with OCSN's Gametracker.
