Oct. 20, 2003

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team was cited by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for academic excellence. The Dolphins' 3.07 team GPA during the 2002-03 academic year ranked 58th among all Division I softball schools in the country. In addition, seven JU players were recognized as scholar-athletes by the NFCA for holding a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

"I am very proud of our team's achievements in the classroom", said JU head coach Jeff Franquet. "It reinforces the fact that performing well academically can lead to success."

Senior third baseman Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood), senior shortstop Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.), senior first baseman Ronda Campo (Kirkland, Wash.), and sophomore catcher Janine Palumbo (Palm Harbor, Fla.) earned scholar-athlete honors, while former Dolphin players Crystal Howland, Lauren Donnelly, and Jill Bandhauer also received mention.

All seven players also earned Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference honors last year, with Korcak being named to the President's Honor Roll for maintaining a perfect GPA of 4.0 during the spring semester. Bandhauer, Cadarette, Campo, Howland, and Palumbo earned Dean's List honors during the 2002-03 academic year.

The Dolphins finished with a record of 23-33, 6-16 in the A-Sun, in their inaugural season in 2003.
